Consolation

Posted on Apr 10, 2020 in 'Thaw', Edward Thomas poet, marsh marigolds | 8 Comments

I’ve decided to add something new to my blog while we are all on lockdown. Now and then I will be posting a photo from our garden and a poem that I am finding consoling in these difficult days. Today it is marsh marigolds and the poem is ‘Thaw’ by Edward Thomas (1878-1917), one of my favourite poets.

Over the land freckled with snow half-thawed
The speculating rooks at their nests cawed
And saw from elm-tops, delicate as flowers of grass,
What we below could not see, Winter pass.

What a lovely idea, Christine! And I do love that ‘photo – it’s bright and cheerful. The poem gives hope, too – just what we need at this time. Thanks for doing this.

Thank you. Both photo and poem (previously unknown to me) are gorgeous.

What a good Idea – I’ve my Norton Anthology of Poetry so it will be able to select a poem a day – since I live in a high rise apartment – I’ll substitution a picture of something I’ve knit in past and send it out to friends and foe alike – unfortunately, no blog or website.

I’m glad you think it is a good idea – and so is yours. Important to keep in touch in these difficult days.
